SENIOR TESTING REQUIREMENT

Program Assessment and Improvement Through Student Evaluation*
In order for the University to assess and improve its academic programs, periodic measurements of student perceptions and intellectual growth must be obtained. Graduating seniors may participate in one or more evaluative procedures, which may include examinations in general education and/or the major field of study. The evaluative information obtained through testing is used solely to improve the quality of the educational experience for future generations of students.

1. Senior General Education Test*
The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) requires that each public institution for higher learning evaluate the general education skills of the senior class. Each year a percentage of the seniors are selected to take the test. The test results enable the University of Tennessee to evaluate the University's general education program and to qualify for needed funding from the state. Students are informed in their senior year if they have been selected to take the test.

2. Senior Major Field Assessment Test
THEC also requires that each public institution for higher learning evaluate the knowledge and expertise obtained within each major area of study. Each year, a subset of all departments on campus is required to test all graduating seniors from those respective areas. The results from these tests enable the University of Tennessee to evaluate and, where necessary, improve the quality of major fields of study. These results also aid in the qualification for needed funding from the state. Students are informed in their senior year if they are required to take such a test.

Benefits to the student:
• Good scores = positive reflection on department and UT which in turn adds value to your degree
• Possible resume enhancer
• If your major is accredited, good performance contributes to accreditation, again adding value to your degree
